Chapter 1 - The Missing Words

My sister placed the cracked plastic phone gently into my trembling palm.
The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room reflected off the shattered screen.
I stared at the paused video, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.
My youngest daughter sat completely motionless in the plastic chair beside my bed.
She had risked her life to capture this nightmare, hiding in the shadows while her own father tortured me.
My sister leaned closer, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective anger.
"Press play, but listen to the background this time," my sister whispered firmly.
I pressed my thumb against the glass, letting the horrible memory play out again.
The tinny audio from the old speaker filled the quiet, sterile room.
I heard the wet, sickening crack of the heavy rope hitting my battered skin.
I heard my mother-in-law laughing her cruel, mocking laugh from the doorway of the shed.
But then my sister reached out and turned the volume up to its maximum limit.
Beneath the sound of my own weeping, another voice became chillingly clear.
It was my husband, muttering under his breath as he prepared another strike.
"Make sure you do not leave any visible marks on her face or her neck," he whispered to his mother.
"The life insurance investigator is coming tomorrow afternoon, and we need this to look like a tragic, accidental fall down the stairs."
My blood turned to absolute ice in my veins as the reality of his words washed over me.
He was not simply punishing me for some imagined disrespect like he always claimed.
He was actively preparing my body to be murdered for a financial payout.
Before I could even process the sheer horror of this revelation, the heavy hospital room door clicked open.
A heavy set of familiar footsteps stepped onto the squeaky linoleum floor.
I looked up and saw my husband standing there, holding a cheap plastic vase of yellow carnations.
He smiled at me, but his dark eyes were completely dead and devoid of any human emotion.
"Hello, honey, I brought the police to take your official statement about your terrible accident," he said smoothly.

Behind him, a tall, uniformed police officer stepped into the room holding a leather notepad.
I recognized the officer instantly as the man who drank beers and played poker with my husband every single Friday night.
