Chapter 6 - The Unmarked Van

Four massive men stepped quickly out of the dark vehicle, their hardened faces heavily shadowed in the night.

They were definitely not police officers, and they certainly were not paramedics coming to check on our injuries.

They wore heavy leather jackets, and I instantly recognized one of them from the terrifying whispers I had overheard in my husband's study.

These were the violent, underground loan sharks my husband had been illegally borrowing massive sums of money from.

"Well, well, it looks like Marco's little domestic problem is having a lovely family reunion," the largest man chuckled darkly.

He pulled a long, heavy steel pipe from the back seat of the van and slapped it aggressively against his open palm.

"Marco owes our boss two hundred grand, and he promised his wife's life insurance payout would cover it by tomorrow morning."

The terrifying truth of this entire decade-long nightmare finally clicked perfectly into place in my mind.

The escalating abuse, the torture in the shed, the planned staircase accident, and the corrupt cop covering it all up.

It was all a desperate, calculated plot to murder me and pay off a massive underworld debt.

"I am not dead yet, so you are not getting any insurance payout from me," I said, forcing myself to stand tall despite the pain.

The large man smirked cruelly and took a slow, menacing step toward my oldest daughter, who was still crying on the grass.

"That is very true, lady, but Marco said if you somehow survived, we could just take the girls as our collateral."

Mia screamed in absolute terror as the massive man lunged forward to grab her by the arm.

My sister acted on pure, unfiltered instinct, pulling a military-grade can of pepper spray from her oversized purse.

She blasted the chemical spray directly into the man's open eyes, sending him crashing to the ground in blinding agony.

"Run to the car right now!" my sister yelled at the top of her lungs, forcefully pushing us toward the front yard.

We scrambled frantically past my mother-in-law, who was still standing rigidly on the porch, watching the chaos in utter shock.

We dove quickly into my sister's sedan just as the other three furious men rounded the corner of the burning house.

My sister slammed her foot on the gas pedal, tearing aggressively across the manicured lawn and smashing right through the wooden fence to escape.

We were safe for the brief moment, speeding down the dark, empty highway far away from the burning house.

Then my sister's phone buzzed loudly and continuously in the center cup holder with an incoming text message.

It was a stark, horrifying picture of my sister's husband, tied to a wooden chair with a severely bloody lip.
