Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

The police officer rushed forward, but he surprisingly did not arrest my husband for the assault.

Instead, he merely pulled him back by the shoulders, whispering frantically for him to calm down.

"Are you completely out of your mind?" the officer hissed aggressively into my husband's ear.

"You cannot do that here, there are doctors and nurses right outside the damn door."

My sister coughed heavily, rubbing her red neck as she backed away toward the wall panel.

"You just proved my point on hospital surveillance cameras, you absolute idiot," she gasped, trying to catch her breath.

My husband realized his massive mistake, and his face flushed purple with unadulterated, violent rage.

"Arrest her right now for stealing my property!" he screamed at the officer, pointing a shaking finger at my sister's purse.

My sister did not wait for the corrupt local cop to make a move against her.

She slammed the palm of her hand forcefully onto the blue emergency code button on the hospital wall.

Instantly, loud sirens blared through the entire hallway, and bright red lights began to flash rapidly above the door.

A swarm of nurses, orderlies, and doctors came sprinting into the room to see which patient was crashing.

In the ensuing chaos, my sister grabbed my daughter's hand and forcefully pulled my wheelchair toward the doorway.

We slipped out into the crowded corridor while the confused medical staff completely blocked the officer's path.

We rushed into the heavy service elevator, the metal doors sliding shut just as my husband violently broke through the crowd of doctors.

I was shaking uncontrollably as the elevator rapidly descended toward the gloomy basement parking garage.

"We need to get back to the house and grab your older sister before he calls his mother," I told my daughter frantically.

My sister drove her sedan like a maniac, speeding through the dark city streets and running two red lights.

We finally pulled up to my suburban house, but every single light inside the building was completely turned off.

The heavy wooden front door was hanging wide open, swinging gently and ominously in the cold night wind.
