Chapter 2 - THE EMPTY CAGE

David didn't realize we were gone until 11:00 AM the next day.

According to the frantic, unhinged voicemails he left on my new encrypted number—which I checked via a secure web portal—he had walked into the house expecting an apology. Instead, he found my wedding ring resting perfectly in the center of the kitchen island, right on top of a printed copy of the wire transfer proving his sister had stolen $20,000 from our son.

Next to it was a single handwritten note: You chose your family. I chose mine.

The voicemails started as angry demands. “Maya, this isn’t funny. Bring Leo back right now or I’m calling the police.”

By 3:00 PM, the anger turned to panic. “Maya, where are you? The police won't file a kidnapping report because of the consent form! Where did you take my son?!”

But the most satisfying message came late that evening. It wasn't from David. It was from Eleanor, his mother, screaming into the phone.

“You little gutter trash! The bank just called Arthur. What did you do to our accounts? If you don't call me back immediately, we will destroy you!”

I smiled, sitting on the balcony of a small, sun-drenched villa overlooking the Tuscan hills. Before I got on the plane, I hadn't just taken my own money. I had sent a comprehensive tip to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, attaching the hard drive's contents. Chloe hadn't just stolen from Leo; she had been using a web of shell companies tied to Arthur's real estate firm to launder the money for her failing boutique.

The Sterlings were about to find out that "gutter trash" bites back.
