Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

Lukas stood there, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sheer panic.
He had walked away from the nurse's station to get coffee and caught me hiding in the hallway.
He grabbed my arm tightly, his fingers digging painfully into my skin as he dragged me into an empty stairwell.
He demanded to know what I was doing at the hospital and how long I had been standing there.
I looked him dead in the eye and finally dropped the oblivious wife act.
I answered him in perfect, fluent German, telling him that I knew absolutely everything.
Lukas stepped back as if I had physically struck him, his face draining of all color.
I told him I knew about Sophia, the forged postnuptial agreement, and the identity fraud he had just committed.
His initial shock quickly morphed into a cornered, desperate rage.
He stepped closer, towering over me in the narrow concrete stairwell.
He sneered, telling me that nobody would believe a hysterical woman who had just emptied her husband's bank account.
He pulled out his phone, threatening to call his corporate IT department right now.
He said he had secretly planted illegal company files on my personal work laptop months ago.
If I went to the police about the forgery, he would have me arrested for corporate espionage and ruin my career permanently.
He told me to go home, pack my bags, and walk away quietly if I wanted to stay out of federal prison.
I simply smiled at him, reached into my pocket, and pulled out my own phone.

I pressed play on the audio file I had just received from Mr. Sterling.
It was the sound of the hospital administrator confirming that the police were already waiting in Sophia's recovery room.
