Chapter 6 - The Hospital Visit

I splashed cold water on my face, forcing my racing heart to slow down.
I walked back into the kitchen, grabbed my purse, and told Ingrid I had a sudden emergency at work.
I left them sitting at my dining table and drove far over the speed limit toward the city's premier maternity hospital.
I didn't go there to cause a scene; I went there to secure the final piece of evidence Sterling needed.
I bypassed the main reception desk, blending in with a large group of visiting family members.
I found the maternity ward and spotted Lukas pacing nervously outside room 412.
He was speaking rapidly on his cell phone, demanding that his lawyer expedite the eviction process against me.
I stepped behind a heavy medical cart, pulling out my phone to record him from the shadows.
A tired-looking nurse walked out of the room holding a clipboard and a birth certificate form.
She smiled at Lukas, congratulating him on the birth of a healthy baby boy.
Lukas thanked her, taking the clipboard to fill out the official state registry documents.
I zoomed my camera lens in as far as it would go, capturing the exact moment his pen hit the paper.
He wasn't writing Sophia's name under the section for the child's biological mother.
He was meticulously writing down my full legal name, Evelyn Vance.
I realized with absolute horror that they weren't just going to dump the baby on me.
They were committing medical identity fraud to legally bind me to the child forever.

If my name was on the state birth certificate, I would be legally responsible for child support even if I left him.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder from behind and spun me around violently.
