Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Demand

The ambient noise of the coffee shop faded into a buzzing static in my ears.

I gripped my phone tightly, refusing to let my voice tremble as I answered her.

I asked Sophia what she wanted, keeping my tone perfectly neutral and polite.

She let out a dramatic, heavily exaggerated sigh that crackled through the speaker.

She told me that Lukas had promised she could move into the master bedroom by the end of the month.

My stomach dropped as I processed the sheer audacity of her statement.

She wasn't calling to apologize for sleeping with my husband.

She was calling to demand that I pack my bags and vacate my own home.

I reminded her that my name was on the deed to that house.

Sophia let out a cruel, mocking laugh that sounded exactly like my mother-in-law's signature chuckle.

She asked me if I honestly believed I still had any legal claim to the property.

She told me to check the bottom drawer of Lukas's desk if I wanted a reality check.

My blood ran completely cold as the pieces of a terrible puzzle began falling into place.

I hung up the phone without saying another word.

I practically sprinted out of the coffee shop and drove straight back to our empty house.

Lukas was at the office, leaving me completely alone to tear his study apart.

I found a locked steel lockbox hidden beneath a stack of old tax returns in the bottom drawer.

I smashed the lock open with a heavy brass paperweight.

Inside lay a single, notarized legal document wrapped in a plastic folder.

It was a postnuptial agreement transferring all my equity in the house directly to Lukas.

At the bottom of the last page, perfectly mimicking my handwriting, was my forged signature.
