Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Kyle stared at the glowing screen of Julian’s phone in complete and utter disbelief.
His entire extortion plan had been flawlessly dismantled in less than sixty seconds.
I walked slowly around my desk, feeling a surge of absolute power that I had never experienced in my previous life.
I looked directly into Kyle’s panicked eyes and told him that he was nothing more than a pathetic coward.
He began to hyperventilate, realizing that he had just willingly walked into an inescapable federal trap.
Julian calmly pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his pocket and tossed them onto the glass desk.
He offered Kyle a single, non-negotiable choice to save himself from spending the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison.
Julian demanded that Kyle testify against the ruthless cartel leaders who had initially ordered the hit on his brothers.
In exchange for his total cooperation, Julian promised to place Kyle in federal protective custody far away from me.
Kyle aggressively shook his head, his face twisting into a mask of pure, desperate rage.
He screamed that the cartel would slowly torture him to death if he ever spoke a single word to the authorities.
He suddenly lunged across the desk, completely ignoring the heavy handcuffs resting on the glass.
Kyle reached into his coat and pulled out a small, metallic detonator equipped with a flashing red light.
He shouted that he had wired the entire foundation of my office building with military-grade explosives.
My heart skipped a painful beat as the flashing red light cast a terrifying glow across the dark room.
Kyle demanded five million dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency, or he would instantly vaporize the entire city block.
Julian did not flinch, his piercing eyes analyzing the small device in Kyle’s trembling hand.
I held my breath, desperately waiting for Julian to draw his weapon and end the standoff.
Instead, Julian started to laugh softly, a sound that deeply unsettled my desperate, unhinged ex-husband.

Julian slowly pointed toward the massive glass window behind me, silently instructing Kyle to look outside into the rainy night.
A sleek black helicopter was hovering silently outside my window, and a heavily armed sniper had a bright red laser perfectly aimed at the center of Kyle’s chest.
