Chapter 1 - The Escape

The scorching afternoon sun beat down on the cracked asphalt as I approached the rusted minivan.

I ignored the lingering cloud of dust left behind by my husband’s retreating truck.

The woman pumping gas looked up at me with tired, deeply observant eyes.

I took a shaky breath and asked if she was heading toward the city.

She studied my tear-stained face, my empty hands, and the desperate look in my eyes.

Without asking a single question about my missing car or my absent purse, she simply nodded.

I climbed into the passenger seat just as a dark realization began to settle over my mind.

Kyle was not going to turn the truck around to come back for me.

He and his brothers were probably laughing uncontrollably while reviewing the humiliating footage they had just recorded.

As the minivan pulled out onto the highway, I stared out the window and watched my old life disappear into the horizon.

The woman introduced herself as Sarah, offering me a warm bottle of water from her center console.

I drank it greedily, feeling a strange sense of liberation washing away my initial panic.

I told Sarah that I had just walked away from a deeply toxic marriage and had absolutely nothing to my name.

She smiled a tight, almost professional smile that did not quite reach her eyes.

We drove in complete silence for another fifty miles before Sarah finally spoke again.

She asked me if I honestly believed that abandoning me was just an innocent, childish prank.

I looked at her in confusion, not understanding what she was trying to imply.

Sarah reached into her glove compartment and pulled out a thick, heavily redacted manila folder.

She tossed it onto my lap, telling me to open it and look at the highlighted bank statements inside.

My heart completely stopped when I recognized my own forged signature at the bottom of a massive corporate loan application.

Sarah looked at me coldly and revealed that she was not just a random traveler passing through town.

She was a private investigator hired to track me down because I was the prime suspect in a two-million-dollar embezzlement case.
