Chapter 2 - The Setup

My hands trembled violently as I flipped through the terrifying documents inside the folder.

Every single page contained undeniable proof that someone had been quietly siphoning millions of dollars through my personal accounts.

I looked at Sarah and frantically swore that I had absolutely no idea this money even existed.

Sarah kept her eyes focused on the empty highway, her expression unreadable and calm.

She explained that Kyle and his brothers owned a failing logistics company that was drowning in massive corporate debt.

They desperately needed a scapegoat to take the fall before the federal auditors arrived at the end of the month.

The cruel prank at the gas station was not just a joke for their pathetic social media channel.

It was a carefully orchestrated setup to make it look like I had panicked and fled the state with the stolen funds.

Kyle deliberately left with my purse and my identification so that I would remain completely untraceable.

If I went back to the police to report him, the authorities would immediately arrest me for the massive financial fraud.

A wave of absolute nausea washed over me as I realized the true depth of my husband’s betrayal.

He had not just broken my heart, but he had actively designed a plan to send me to federal prison for the rest of my life.

I asked Sarah why she picked me up if she was hired to bring me in to face the corporate lawyers.

She smiled faintly and said that she had been watching Kyle’s entire family for months.

Sarah knew that I was innocent, but she needed my inside knowledge to prove that the brothers were the real criminals.

She offered me a dangerous deal right there in the passenger seat of her dusty minivan.

If I agreed to disappear completely and help her build an airtight case from the shadows, she would protect me.

I did not have to think twice about accepting her offer to take down the man who had destroyed my life.

We drove through the night, crossing three state lines before finally stopping at a cheap motel.

Sarah handed me a burner phone and told me to check the local news online.

I clicked on the first article, and the blood instantly drained from my face.

The headline announced that Kyle’s truck had just been found completely engulfed in flames at the bottom of a steep ravine.
