Chapter 3 - The Ghost

I stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone in absolute horror.
The news report stated that the burning truck was discovered miles away from the gas station where I was abandoned.
Local police had recovered three unrecognizable bodies from the charred wreckage of the vehicle.
The authorities had already officially declared that Kyle, Brad, and Chase were tragically killed in a horrific accident.
I dropped the phone onto the cheap motel bed, my mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
Sarah walked into the room carrying two cups of black coffee, completely unfazed by the breaking news.
I screamed at her, demanding to know if she had orchestrated the fiery crash to eliminate my husband.
She sighed heavily and handed me a cup, calmly telling me to sit down and think rationally.
Sarah explained that the brothers had incredibly powerful, dangerous enemies in the criminal underworld.
They had borrowed the initial two million dollars from a ruthless syndicate, and they missed their final payment deadline yesterday.
The mob did not care about Kyle’s elaborate plan to frame his innocent wife for the missing money.
They simply wanted their cash back, and they sent professional assassins to collect the debt in blood.
I realized that by leaving me at the gas station, Kyle had accidentally saved my life from the cartel hitmen.
However, my relief was immediately shattered by Sarah’s next chilling statement.
She warned me that the syndicate would soon realize the two million dollars was still missing from Kyle’s accounts.
When they hacked into the banking records, they would see my forged signature on all the transfer documents.
The most dangerous men in the country would soon be hunting me, believing that I possessed their stolen millions.
I had no choice but to completely erase my past identity and become a ghost.
Sarah handed me a sleek black envelope containing a new passport, a new social security number, and a new name.
From that moment forward, Lena was officially dead, and I became Elena Vance.
We spent the next few weeks transferring funds through encrypted offshore accounts to cover our tracks.

Just as I started to feel safe in my new hidden life, Sarah’s encrypted laptop began to beep frantically.
Someone had just accessed the supposedly dead bank accounts using Kyle’s personal biometric password.
