Chapter 9 - The Arrest

"Marcus Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, abuse, and financial fraud regarding the embezzlement of joint assets."

Marcus tried to run. He spun around, sprinting toward the street, but he didn't make it five yards. One of the officers tackled him to the frozen grass.

"Get off me! I'm a Vance! You can't do this to me!" he shrieked, thrashing in the dirt as the cuffs clicked around his wrists.

I walked down the steps and stood over him. He looked pathetic. Small. Weak.

"You told me she wasn't family," I said quietly, staring into his panicked eyes. "You were right. She's not your family. She's mine. And you will never come near her again."

They hauled him to his feet and shoved him into the back of the cruiser. I watched the taillights fade down the street, taking the nightmare away forever.
