Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I stood in the entryway, dressed in my crisp Naval dress uniform. I wasn't alone.

Flanking me were two uniformed police officers, Detective Miller from the Child Abuse unit, and Elias Thorne, clutching a thick leather briefcase.

"What... what is this?" Marcus stammered, taking a step back.

"This is the end of the line, Marcus," I said, stepping out onto the porch. The cold night air felt amazing.

"You can't do this! That's my house! That's my money!" Marcus lunged forward, but the two officers instantly stepped between us, hands resting on their utility belts.

Thorne stepped forward, adjusting his glasses. "Actually, Mr. Vance, as of 9:00 AM yesterday, this property, along with all assets tied to the Vance Family Endowment, belongs to your wife, as the legal guardian of Chloe Vance. You are currently trespassing."

"Bullshit!" Marcus spat. "My grandmother's trust is mine! You can't just steal it!"

"Section 4, Paragraph 8," Thorne recited smoothly. "Endangerment of a minor beneficiary. You triggered the clause yourself."

Marcus's face went pale. "You can't prove anything."
