Chapter 4 - The Whistler Illusion

(Meanwhile, in Canada)
Marcus sat by the roaring fire in a five-star ski lodge in Whistler, a glass of thousand-dollar scotch in his hand. His twin daughters were out on the slopes with private instructors. He felt untouchable.
He pulled out his phone to check his bank app. He had transferred fifty thousand dollars from the joint account to his private checking before leaving. He smiled, imagining my face when I came home to an empty house, an empty bank account, and the annoying little adopted brat out of his hair forever. Trent was supposed to take the kid to the state orphanage and claim she was found wandering. Perfect plan.
"Sir, your card was declined," the lodge concierge said, stepping up to Marcus's table with a silver tray.
Marcus frowned. "Excuse me? Run it again. It's a Black Card."
"I did, sir. Three times. The bank says the account is frozen. In fact, all the accounts associated with the Vance Endowment are returning an 'Unauthorized Access' error."

Marcus's stomach dropped. He grabbed his phone and dialed his private banker. Beep. Beep. Disconnected. He dialed Trent. Straight to voicemail.
A creeping sense of dread began to crawl up Marcus's spine.
