Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

Six Months Later.
The summer sun was shining brightly over the backyard of our new home—a beautiful, sprawling estate that belonged entirely to Chloe’s trust.
I sat on the patio, sipping iced tea and watching Chloe run through the sprinklers. Her laughter echoed across the lawn, bright and untethered. The bruises were long gone. The nightmares had faded. She was thriving, enrolled in a wonderful school, and taking horseback riding lessons.
Marcus had taken a plea deal. He was serving ten years in a state penitentiary. Trent got five. The twins were living happily with their biological mother, who had finally been granted full custody thanks to the evidence of Marcus's abuse. Grandpa Vance lived in a comfortable assisted living facility, fully paid for by the trust—my way of thanking him for doing the right thing.
I looked down at the legal documents on the patio table. The divorce was finalized. The adoption was airtight. The five million dollars was secure, growing in diversified accounts to ensure Chloe would never want for anything in her life.
Chloe ran up to me, soaking wet, wrapping her arms around my waist.

"I love you, Mama," she beamed.
I kissed the top of her wet head, holding her tight. "I love you too, my sweet girl. We're safe now. For good."
