Chapter 6 - The Impostor

The mayor smiled wickedly, his expensive suit looking entirely out of place in the damp, subterranean tunnel.

My parents looked at me with absolute terror in their eyes, their hands securely tied behind their backs with heavy zip ties.

"Let them go," I demanded, trying to keep my voice from shaking under the immense pressure.

"You have the open vault now, you do not need us anymore."

The mayor laughed a cold, soulless laugh that echoed terribly against the concrete walls.

"You really think this is just about a simple ledger, Daniel?" the mayor asked mockingly.

He gestured to one of his massive guards, who dragged a battered, old man out of the shadows.

It was my grandfather, Salvador, looking exhausted and completely defeated.

"Grandpa!" I yelled, taking a desperate step forward before the guards raised their heavy weapons.

Salvador looked up at me, but his eyes did not hold that familiar, mischievous sparkle.

He looked absolutely terrified, his hands trembling as he stared at the open vault door.

"Tell the boy the truth, old man," the mayor commanded, pressing his gun against my mother's head.

Salvador swallowed hard, tears streaming down his wrinkled, bruised face.

"I am so sorry, Daniel, but I am not your real grandfather," the old man choked out.

My entire world spun violently on its axis as I stared at the man I had loved for seventeen years.

"My real name is Arthur, and I was hired to play the role of Salvador to keep you completely hidden," the impostor confessed.

"The real Salvador has been locked inside that exact vault for the last five years."

The mayor kicked the heavy titanium door wide open, revealing a dark, terrifying cell hidden behind the banking facade.

Chained to the far wall of the vault was a man who looked exactly like my father.
