Chapter 5 - The Gala Heist

Elena reacted with terrifying speed, flipping the heavy mattress up to absorb the initial volley of bullets.

"Out the window, right now!" she screamed, firing two precise shots back at the heavily armed hitmen.

I grabbed Salvador's journal and dove headfirst through the fragile glass window into the dark alley below.

Elena landed smoothly right beside me, and we sprinted through the shadows as the hitmen shouted angrily behind us.

We managed to steal a parked delivery van and sped away into the chaotic downtown traffic.

"We cannot wait until midnight, we have to infiltrate the mayor's gala right now," Elena said, gripping the steering wheel tightly.

We drove to a high-end theatrical supply store and bought elegant formal wear using Salvador's hidden cash reserves.

I put on a sharp black tuxedo, while Elena disguised herself in a stunning, sweeping red evening gown.

We arrived at the luxurious downtown hotel, blending perfectly into the crowd of wealthy, corrupt elites.

The gala was heavily guarded by the mayor's private security team, but Elena flawlessly picked the lock to the restricted basement stairwell.

We descended deep underground, leaving the classical music and the clinking champagne glasses far behind us.

The basement was a labyrinth of concrete tunnels leading to a massive, state-of-the-art titanium vault door.

"The routing number on your check is the biometric override sequence," Elena whispered, pointing to the digital keypad.

I pulled out the faded check, my hands sweating profusely as I typed the numbers into the glowing panel.

The heavy titanium door hissed loudly, the internal locking mechanisms slowly releasing.

Suddenly, a heavy metal baton struck Elena violently across the back of her head.

She crumpled to the concrete floor, completely unconscious.

I spun around in horror, only to find the city's corrupt mayor standing there with a squad of armed guards.

"Thank you for opening the door, Daniel," the mayor sneered, holding my captured parents at gunpoint.
