Chapter 4 - The Apprentice

I slowly raised my hands, feeling the cold steel of the gun pressing harder against my skull.

"Turn around very slowly," the woman ordered, stepping slightly back to maintain her tactical distance.

I turned to see a young woman in her twenties, wearing dark tactical gear and holding the weapon with expert precision.

"Who are you, and where is my family?" I demanded, trying to hide the intense fear in my voice.

She lowered the gun slightly, her sharp brown eyes studying my face with intense curiosity.

"My name is Elena, and I am your grandfather's most trusted apprentice," she replied softly.

She quickly walked over to the windows, pulling the heavy curtains shut to block out the streetlights.

"If I wanted to hurt you, you would already be dead on that carpet," Elena stated factually.

She explained that Salvador had known the vicious Blackwood Syndicate was closing in on him.

He gave me the check as a desperate insurance policy, knowing I was the only person he could truly trust.

"The syndicate kidnapped your parents to force you to hand over the vault coordinates," Elena explained.

"What exactly is inside this mythical vault?" I asked, pointing to the complex blueprints on the bed.

"It contains the syndicate's master ledger, proving that the city's mayor and the police chief are running the entire criminal empire."

If we could get that ledger, we could destroy the syndicate and trade the evidence for my parents' lives.

"We have to decode the check and break into the vault tonight," I said with fierce determination.

Elena smiled, pulling a sophisticated decryption device from her tactical backpack.

We spent the next two hours running the routing numbers through Salvador's complex algorithms.

The computer finally pinged, revealing the vault was hidden directly beneath the mayor's private charity gala downtown.

Just as we finalized our heist plan, a massive explosion violently ripped the apartment door off its hinges.

Three heavily armed hitmen stormed into the room, their laser sights aimed directly at our chests.
