Chapter 1 - The Birthday Joke

When I think of my grandfather Salvador, I always remember him with a mischievous smile on his face.

He was the kind of person who turned any normal moment into a wild, unforgettable story.

I never imagined that his final joke would be the biggest and most terrifying of all.

I was exactly seventeen years old when he handed me that faded paper check.

My birthday party was filled with loud music, family laughter, and the sweet smell of chocolate cake.

My parents had organized a simple dinner in our small suburban home.

My grandfather arrived late, wearing his inseparable vintage hat and carrying a small box wrapped in golden paper.

"Here you go, Daniel," he said, winking at me from across the kitchen island.

"This is so you can finally learn the true value of money in this world."

Everyone in the room laughed out loud, even my parents.

They all knew Salvador was notoriously broke and lived entirely on his meager retirement pension.

The check was written for an astronomical amount of ten million dollars.

I rolled my eyes, hugged him, and stuffed the paper into my denim jacket pocket as a funny souvenir.

But the very next morning, sheer curiosity got the better of my teenage mind.

I walked down to the massive downtown bank branch just to see what the teller would say.

I handed the paper to the young cashier, expecting a polite chuckle or a gentle scolding.

Instead, all the color instantly drained from her face as she scanned the routing numbers.

Her hands began to tremble violently as she stared at the computer screen.

She did not say a single word to me.

She simply picked up her desk phone and pressed a red emergency button.

Within seconds, a tall man in a sharp gray suit rushed out of the back office.

He looked at the screen, and his eyes widened in absolute horror as he stared directly at me.

Suddenly, the heavy steel security shutters over the bank windows began to aggressively slam shut.

The manager pulled a black radio from his belt and whispered frantically into the microphone.

"Lock the main doors right now, because we found the missing heir."
