Chapter 9 - The Police Standoff

The blaring police sirens sent an immediate wave of pure panic through the armed thugs.

The lead man cursed loudly, ripping the gun away from my head and rushing toward the shattered window.

Red and blue lights flooded the front lawn, illuminating dozens of heavily armed sheriff's deputies surrounding the property.

"We are completely boxed in!" one of the younger thugs yelled, his voice cracking with fear.

Holt fell to his knees in the hallway, weeping like a complete coward as his entire criminal life collapsed.

Eleanor tried to slowly inch her way toward the back stairs, hoping to slip away unnoticed.

"Nobody moves a single inch!" the lead thug roared, waving his gun wildly around the room.

He realized he needed absolute leverage to negotiate a safe passage out of the surrounded house.

His cruel, desperate eyes locked directly onto Juny, who was standing frozen in the bathroom doorway.

Before I could even scream, he lunged forward and grabbed my daughter by her fragile shoulders.

He dragged Juny aggressively toward the shattered front window, pressing his massive arm tightly across her chest.

"Let her go, she just had major surgery!" I shrieked, fighting wildly against two other thugs holding me back.

Juny gasped in horrific pain as the man's grip pressed directly against her fresh surgical incisions.

"Back off right now, or the girl goes over the balcony!" the man screamed at the police officers outside.

A tense, suffocating silence fell over the property as the police commander raised a megaphone.

"Release the hostage immediately, and we can resolve this peacefully," the commander's voice boomed through the crisp mountain air.

Davina was curled in a pathetic ball on the floor, doing absolutely nothing to help her dying niece.

I knew I could not wait for the police to negotiate with a man who had absolutely nothing left to lose.

I noticed a heavy brass lamp resting on the nightstand just inches from my right hand.

I violently elbowed the thug holding me directly in the jaw, hearing a satisfying crack as he stumbled backward.

May you like

I grabbed the heavy brass lamp with both hands and swung it with every ounce of furious strength I possessed.

I aimed directly for the back of the lead thug's skull just as he prepared to push Juny.
