Chapter 7 - The Desperate Standoff
The barrel of the shotgun looked massive as Robert aimed it squarely at my pounding heart.
Elena froze, holding the bloody, metallic capsule tightly in her surgical forceps.
"You really haven't changed at all, Robert, always willing to kill for a quick payout," Elena sneered with pure disgust.
Robert laughed coldly, stepping completely into the room and kicking the unconscious henchman out of his way.
"You should have stayed dead, Elena, now I have to clean up this mess all over again," Robert mocked.
Maya groaned weakly on the table, her skin dangerously pale from the massive blood loss.
"Please, Robert, she is your own daughter, just let us take her to a real hospital," I begged frantically.
"She ceased to be my daughter the second she stole ten million dollars from my desk," he replied without a shred of emotion.
He held out his left hand, wiggling his fingers impatiently.
"Give me the capsule right now, or I start shooting everyone in this room," Robert threatened.
Elena looked at me with a profound, silent apology in her dark eyes.
She slowly placed the bloody metal cylinder directly into Robert's waiting palm.
Robert smiled victoriously, quickly slipping the contaminated capsule into a sterile plastic evidence bag.
"Thank you for doing the messy surgical work for me, ladies," Robert gloated with unmatched arrogance.
He slowly backed out of the room, aiming the shotgun at us until he reached the hallway.
"Burn the building to the ground and leave no survivors," Robert yelled to his remaining men outside.
He slammed the heavy metal security door shut, locking us completely inside the surgical suite.
Thick, black smoke immediately began pouring through the air vents as his men set the clinic on fire.
I fell to my knees in absolute despair, realizing we were going to burn alive in this makeshift tomb.

Elena did not panic at all, she simply reached into the deep pocket of her surgical scrubs.
She pulled out the real, glowing data capsule and smiled a wickedly brilliant smile.
