Chapter 3 - The Midnight Escape

I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the hospital parking lot at a reckless speed.
Glass rained down onto the back seats as I swerved wildly into the busy evening traffic.
Maya was curled into a tight ball on the passenger seat, clutching her agonizing stomach and sobbing.
"I am so sorry, Mom, I should have never gone into his home office," she cried hysterically.
I drove toward the highway, constantly checking my mirrors to see if the dark suits were following us.
"What exactly is on that drive, Maya?" I asked, my voice shaking with pure adrenaline.
She explained that Robert had stolen classified genetic sequences from his own company to sell to a foreign cartel.
"I found the capsule on his desk, and I knew it was the only proof of his treason," Maya gasped.
She had swallowed the drive to hide it when she heard his heavy footsteps coming down the hallway.
"He has been waiting for the acid to slowly kill me so he could cut it out without any witnesses," she confessed.
My blood ran absolutely cold as the true depth of my husband's evil washed over me.
He had watched his own daughter slowly dying at the dinner table and simply called her dramatic.
I pulled into a dingy, secluded motel on the outskirts of the city to hide for the night.
I left Maya resting on the sagging bed and ran to the corner store to buy water and bandages.
When I tried to use my credit card to pay, the machine beeped with a loud, aggressive red error message.
"Card declined, lady," the cashier grunted, tossing the plastic back onto the counter.
I tried three different bank cards, but every single one of our joint accounts had been completely frozen.
Robert was using his immense corporate wealth to cut off all of my resources.
I ran back to the motel room, realizing we were entirely completely alone and hunted.

When I pushed the cheap wooden door open, the room was entirely empty.
Maya’s bloody hoodie was lying on the floor, and the window was shattered from the outside.
