Chapter 9 - The Brothers' War

The armored SUV screeched to a halt in a dark alleyway miles from the compromised main compound.

Nikolai punched the reinforced dashboard, his calm, calculating facade finally breaking into pure, unrestrained violence.

"Julian traded Serena to us just to empty the compound of my best men," Nikolai growled, his eyes burning with lethal fury.

"He used the hostage situation as a distraction to seize control of the entire family council."

I looked at my husband, realizing he had sacrificed his entire empire and absolute power just to save my life.

"We have to go back and stop him," I said, my voice steady despite the terrifying reality of our situation.

Nikolai shook his head, reloading his weapons with rapid, mechanical precision.

"No, Evelyn, I am sending you and Penny to a private airstrip, you are flying to Europe tonight."

I grabbed his arm, my fingers digging fiercely into his dark, blood-stained jacket.

"I am your wife, Nikolai, and I am not running away while you walk into a suicide mission."

He paused, looking deep into my eyes, and for the first time, he saw a woman who was truly ready to rule beside him.

"If we do this, there is no going back to a normal life, Evelyn," he warned softly.

"I stopped wanting a normal life the second you kissed me," I replied, grabbing a loaded pistol from the tactical bag.

We left Penny hidden safely in a secure hotel and drove directly to the heavily fortified gates of the Moretti compound.

The massive iron gates were locked, guarded by heavily armed men loyal exclusively to Julian's new regime.

Nikolai did not even touch the brakes; he floored the accelerator, driving the heavy armored SUV directly through the steel barricade.

The massive impact sent sparks flying wildly into the night sky as we breached the inner courtyard in a hail of gunfire.

We jumped out of the wrecked vehicle, moving perfectly together through the shadows like we had been fighting side-by-side for years.

Nikolai was a force of absolute nature, taking down Julian's guards with ruthless, terrifying efficiency.

We breached the massive double doors of the grand dining hall, where Julian was holding the terrified family council at gunpoint.

"It is over, Julian!" Nikolai roared, stepping into the light with his weapon aimed directly at his brother's chest.

Julian laughed, an unhinged, manic sound that echoed loudly off the marble walls of the dining hall.

"You are too late, Nikolai, the council already signed the transfer documents, I am the undisputed head of the family now."

Julian grabbed the oldest council member, pressing a gun to the terrified man's temple to use him as a human shield.

"Drop your weapons, or I start executing the elders one by one!" Julian screamed desperately.

Nikolai hesitated for a fraction of a second, completely torn between saving his men and securing his stolen empire.

I didn't hesitate at all; I raised my pistol, focused entirely on the target, and pulled the heavy trigger.

The bullet grazed Julian's shoulder, throwing his aim wildly off balance and giving Nikolai the exact opening he needed.
