Chapter 8 - The Warehouse Trap

The brutal impact threw me violently against the metal wall of the van, leaving my ears ringing fiercely.

Serena screamed as the airbags deployed, pinning her heavily against the dashboard in a cloud of white smoke.

The back doors of the van were suddenly ripped open from the outside, flooding the dark interior with bright, flashing tactical lights.

Nikolai reached inside, his face covered in soot and blood, and effortlessly dragged me to safety.

He pulled a combat knife from his vest and quickly sliced through the thick plastic zip-ties binding my wrists.

"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his hands frantically checking me for any serious injuries.

"I am fine, but Serena is working for the Rossi family!" I yelled over the chaotic blare of approaching sirens.

Nikolai did not look surprised; he simply turned and aimed his assault rifle directly into the wrecked cabin of the van.

"Julian figured that out an hour ago, which is why he sold her out to us," Nikolai stated coldly.

My mind raced, trying to understand the terrifying, ever-shifting web of betrayal within this family.

"Julian is working with you now?" I asked, completely bewildered by the sudden alliance.

"Julian only cares about survival, and when he realized Serena hired the assassins, he traded her location for my temporary forgiveness."

Nikolai reached into the van, grabbed my screaming, kicking sister by the collar, and threw her roughly onto the wet pavement.

"You are a monster!" Serena shrieked, crying messy tears as two of Nikolai's massive guards firmly restrained her.

"No, Serena," I said, walking slowly toward her, feeling absolutely nothing but cold pity for the girl I used to love.

"You are the monster, and you finally got exactly what you deserved."

I turned my back on her forever, leaving her screaming my name as Nikolai's men hauled her away into the darkness.

"Where is Penny?" I asked, looking desperately around the chaotic, heavily guarded street.

Nikolai gestured toward a sleek black sedan parked safely behind his armored convoy.

I ran over and opened the door, crying tears of pure relief as Penny pulled me into a desperate, crushing hug.

"I am so sorry I got you dragged into this nightmare," I sobbed into my friend's shoulder.

"Just promise me your next husband will be an accountant," Penny joked weakly, her hands still shaking from the terror.

Nikolai approached the car, signaling his heavily armed men to form a protective perimeter around us.

"We need to leave the city immediately, the Rossi family knows this operation has failed and they will retaliate," Nikolai ordered.

We climbed into the back of a fresh, heavily armored SUV, surrounded by a convoy of Nikolai's most loyal soldiers.

I leaned against Nikolai's chest, feeling the heavy, steady beat of his heart as we sped toward the safety of his compound.

I finally believed the worst was entirely over and that we had actually survived the brutal gang war.

Then, the SUV's encrypted radio crackled loudly with a frantic, terrified transmission from the lead security vehicle.

"Boss, the council just betrayed us, Julian has seized the main compound, and he is holding the entire syndicate leadership hostage."
