Chapter 7 - The Hostage Exchange

The industrial warehouse district of Chicago was completely abandoned, shrouded in a thick, eerie morning fog.

Nikolai parked the SUV two blocks away from the massive steel building Julian had specified for the exchange.

"You stay in the car, Evelyn, my men will breach the building from the roof and secure Penny," Nikolai ordered, loading his rifle.

"She is my best friend, Nikolai, I am not sitting this out while she is terrified and in danger," I argued fiercely.

He grabbed my shoulders, his intense gaze burning directly into my soul.

"If Julian gets his hands on you, he will torture you just to watch me break, and I cannot allow that to happen."

I looked into his eyes, seeing the genuine, desperate fear of a man who finally had something precious to lose.

"I trust you," I whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his lips before sitting back in the leather seat.

He kissed my forehead, slipped out of the vehicle, and vanished silently into the thick, swirling fog.

I sat in the cold, silent SUV, watching the digital clock on the dashboard slowly count down to the dawn deadline.

Five minutes passed in absolute, agonizing silence.

Then, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the second-floor windows of the warehouse, followed by a deafening explosion.

Gunfire echoed fiercely across the empty shipping yards as Nikolai's elite tactical teams breached the compound.

I gripped the door handle, praying with every fiber of my being that Nikolai and Penny were safe inside.

Suddenly, the passenger side window of the SUV shattered completely, raining sharp glass across my lap.

A heavy, gloved hand reached in, unlocked the door, and aggressively dragged me out onto the cold, wet pavement.

I kicked and screamed, fighting wildly as two massive men in tactical gear dragged me toward a waiting black van.

They threw me roughly into the back of the van, slamming the heavy doors shut and plunging me into darkness.

The van sped away, tires screeching wildly on the damp concrete.

"You put up a much better fight than I expected, Evelyn," a soft, familiar voice chuckled from the front passenger seat.

The interior lights flickered on, revealing my sister Serena turning around to look at me with a sickeningly sweet smile.

"Serena?" I gasped, coughing from the dust and completely confused by her presence.

"Julian didn't kidnap your pathetic little friend, Evelyn, I did," she laughed, checking her flawless makeup in the visor mirror.

"Why are you doing this, Serena?" I demanded, struggling desperately against the heavy zip-ties biting into my wrists.

Serena's sweet smile instantly vanished, replaced by a dark, twisted look of pure, ugly jealousy.

"Because you were always the smart one, the capable one, the one everyone secretly respected," she hissed bitterly.

"Julian never loved me, he just used me to humiliate you, and the moment he got the trust fund, he planned to discard me too."

She leaned over the seat, pointing a small, silver pistol directly at my face.

"So I made a deal with the Rossi family to kill Julian, kill Nikolai, and kill you."

Before I could even process her complete descent into madness, the van slammed violently into a solid concrete barricade.
