Chapter 5 - The Safe House

Nikolai grabbed my waist and threw us violently backward just as the massive mahogany desk exploded into a thousand flaming splinters.
The shockwave knocked the breath completely out of my lungs, slamming me hard against the heavy oak bookshelves.
Thick black smoke filled the study, blinding me and burning my throat as I gasped for air.
"Evelyn!" Nikolai shouted, his strong hands finding me in the dark and pulling me roughly to my feet.
The room's emergency fire suppression system activated, raining chemical foam down on the burning wreckage.
We stumbled through a hidden doorway behind the bookshelves, descending a dark, narrow spiral staircase built into the walls.
"Who planted that bomb?" I coughed, my beautiful wedding dress now ruined and covered in ash.
"Someone who had top-level access to my inner sanctuary," Nikolai growled, his voice vibrating with absolute, murderous rage.
We emerged in the underground parking garage, sprinting toward an unmarked, heavily armored black SUV.
Nikolai drove us out of the city like a madman, weaving through traffic and evading the burning wreckage of his own empire.
We drove for three hours in complete silence, heading deep into the isolated, heavily forested mountains of Wisconsin.
He pulled off the main highway, navigating a hidden dirt road that led to a brutalist concrete cabin surrounded by tall pines.
"Welcome to my ghost house," Nikolai said, unlocking the heavy steel front door.
The cabin was sparsely furnished, stocked with crates of weapons, medical supplies, and emergency rations.
I collapsed onto the leather sofa, entirely exhausted by the sheer chaos of my wedding day.
Nikolai walked into the small kitchen, poured a glass of water, and brought it to me with surprising gentleness.
"You saved my life on the balcony today," he said quietly, sitting beside me on the sofa.
"You shielded me from the bomb," I replied, taking the water with trembling hands.
He looked at me, the cold, ruthless mafia boss facade finally cracking to reveal something intensely vulnerable underneath.
"I have watched you from a distance for two years, Evelyn," he confessed, his dark eyes locking onto mine.
I froze, the glass of water pausing halfway to my lips.
"Julian never deserved you, and I only let him propose because I thought it would keep you safe from my world."
He reached out, his thumb gently wiping a smear of dark soot from my cheek.
"I was wrong, and I will never let anyone hurt you again."
My heart hammered against my ribs, realizing this terrifying, dangerous man actually cared for me more deeply than anyone ever had.
I leaned into his touch, my body acting entirely on a sudden, overwhelming instinct.
I kissed him, a desperate, fierce collision of fear and adrenaline that quickly deepened into intense passion.
He pulled me onto his lap, his hands strong and possessive as we finally surrendered to the undeniable electricity between us.
We fell asleep tangled in the heavy wool blankets, the violence of the day momentarily forgotten in his protective arms.
I woke up hours later, the cabin entirely dark except for the glowing screen of the laptop Nikolai had left on the coffee table.
I crept over to the screen, intending to close the lid, when I saw the flashing alert of an intercepted bank transfer.
The massive payment to the Rossi family assassins had finally cleared through a hidden offshore account.

I clicked on the account details, my blood running completely cold as the true identity of the owner appeared on the screen.
The millions of dollars used to buy the bomb and hire the snipers came directly from a trust fund belonging to Serena.
