Chapter 8 - The Arrest

The federal marshal didn't waste a single breath on polite introductions.

He marched straight across the Persian rug, completely ignoring the screaming women and the bleeding patriarch on the floor.

He stopped directly in front of Richard Sterling, who was still trying to staunch the blood flowing from his broken nose.

"Richard Sterling," the marshal announced, his voice echoing loudly in the spacious study. "You are being placed under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion."

Richard scrambled backward on his hands and knees, glaring up in absolute outrage. "Do you have any idea who I am? I demand to speak to the district attorney right now! This is an outrage orchestrated by a bitter, low-class nobody!"

The marshal didn't flinch. He grabbed Richard by his expensive cashmere sweater and hauled him upright with ruthless efficiency.

"I know exactly who you are, Mr. Sterling," the marshal replied dryly, snapping the heavy steel handcuffs onto his trembling wrists. "And your high-society friends down at the courthouse stopped returning your phone calls about twenty minutes ago."

Victoria lunged forward to intervene, grabbing the marshal's arm. "You can't arrest him! He's a pillar of this community! You need a signed warrant from a superior judge!"

The marshal pulled a second set of cold steel cuffs from his tactical belt and slapped them onto Victoria's wrists before she could pull away.

"Victoria Sterling Cross, you are also being detained as a co-conspirator in ongoing financial crimes and child abuse endangerment," the marshal stated smoothly, reading her rights without missing a beat.

Victoria let out a piercing shriek of pure, unadulterated shock as the metal locked tightly around her delicate wrists. "Daniel! Tell them to take these off me! Tell them this is a terrible mistake!"

I stood by the window, watching the second bulldozer tear down the decorative wooden veranda outside. "It's no mistake, Victoria," I said without turning around. "You made your bed when you handed your father the belt."

Ashley and Brooke backed frantically toward the corner of the room, clutching each other and begging the officers not to look at them.

The marshal signaled to the two local police officers waiting in the hallway. "Clear the room. Take all of them down to the federal holding facility in Bridgeport."

Within minutes, the once-proud pillars of the Sterling dynasty were being frog-marched out of my front doors in heavy steel chains.

Richard was muttering furious legal threats that nobody was listening to anymore.

Victoria was sobbing hysterically, screaming my name in a desperate plea for mercy that never came.

As the police cruisers roared out of the gated driveway with their sirens wailing into the morning air, a profound, eerie silence settled over the ruined mansion.

The heavy demolition trucks continued their relentless work outside, turning the manicured lawns into churned mud.

I stood alone in the center of my destroyed study, looking down at the drop of Richard's blood still staining the white Persian wool.

The first phase of my vengeance was complete.

The Sterling empire had officially crumbled into dust in less than an hour.

My phone vibrated sharply in my pocket, breaking the quiet spell.

It was Marcus calling from the Stamford pediatric clinic where Mason was recovering.

I answered instantly, my heart instantly tightening in my chest. "Marcus, how is he?"

"Daniel, you need to get down here right now," Marcus said, his voice unusually tense.

May you like

"Did something happen? Is he worse?"

"Not physically," Marcus replied hesitantly. "A woman just arrived at the clinic claiming to be Mason's biological mother."
