Chapter 1 - The First Feed

The first thing I saw was my six-year-old son hanging upside down from the ceiling of my garage.
For several seconds, my brain refused to process the horrifying reality unfolding on my laptop screen.
The screen displayed four live security feeds from my sprawling home in Greenwich, Connecticut.
I was more than eight hundred miles away in a high-rise hotel suite overlooking downtown Chicago.
An hour earlier, I had been deep into negotiations for acquiring a major transportation software company.
Now, all of that corporate ambition meant absolutely nothing to me.
Because in the lower-right corner of my screen, my little boy Mason was sobbing softly.
His small ankles had been tightly bound together with coarse rope and hoisted over a wooden support beam.
His favorite blue dinosaur shirt had slid down toward his tense, frightened shoulders.
His small hands reached desperately toward the padded garage floor below him.
Standing directly beneath him was my wealthy, arrogant father-in-law, Richard Sterling.
At sixty-eight years old, Richard possessed all the hallmarks of old-money privilege.
He had perfectly silvered hair, an expensive navy cashmere sweater, and a gleaming gold Rolex.
He was the former chairman of Sterling Development Group, a prominent Connecticut real-estate dynasty.
He looked completely relaxed, as if he were tending to a garden rather than torturing a child.
That chilling calm was far more disturbing than the thick rope binding my son.
Then I saw my wife walk into the frame.
Victoria was Mason's mother, yet she stood beside her father with her arms crossed over her chest.
For one irrational second, a desperate part of me hoped she was going to stop him.
Instead, she walked slowly toward my custom workbench near the back wall.
She reached out and pulled open the heavy metal drawer.
She retrieved my thick leather belt from inside.
And without a single shred of hesitation, she handed it directly to her father.
My entire body went numb as ice water flooded my veins.
Richard folded the heavy leather once and tested its weight against his calloused palm.
Then he raised his arm into the air.
I jumped so violently from my ergonomic chair that it crashed backward into the wall behind me.
My hot coffee spilled all over the confidential acquisition documents spread across the mahogany desk.
I barely noticed the dark liquid staining the important papers.
Richard swung the belt downward with a sickening crack.
Mason’s small body jerked violently from the impact.
I couldn't hear the screams because I had disabled the indoor audio recording years ago at Victoria's request.
She had convinced me it was a necessary safety measure to protect our family's digital privacy.
Now, looking at the silent horror on the screen, I finally understood her true motive.
Behind Richard stood three other adult women, watching the abuse unfold like a spectator sport.
They were Victoria's socialite cousins: Ashley Sterling, Brooke Chandler, and Madeline Price.
They were all wealthy adults from a family that constantly photographed themselves at charity galas.
Not a single one of them made a move to help my terrified son.
Brooke was holding up her smartphone, recording the entire sadistic spectacle.
Ashley actually appeared to be laughing behind her jeweled hand.
Madeline had one hand pressed over her mouth, but even through the grainy feed, I saw no horror in her eyes.
She looked thoroughly entertained.
I glanced down at the timestamp in the corner of the monitor.
May you like
It read 7:18 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, exactly twenty-one minutes ago.
I grabbed my cell phone with trembling fingers and dialed the only man I trusted in this world.
