Chapter 10 - The False Victory

My hands shook slightly as I opened the thick manila folder across the table.

Inside were certified hospital birth records, legal adoption annulments, and a complete DNA sequencing profile stamped by a federal medical examiner.

I scanned the documents, my breath catching in my throat as the horrific truth unfolded before my eyes.

Six years ago, Victoria Sterling had suffered a catastrophic medical diagnosis that permanently rendered her sterile.

Terrified of losing her high-society status and her iron grip on the Sterling family inheritance, she had refused to accept the truth.

Instead, Richard Sterling had used his immense wealth and corrupt political connections to orchestrate a devastating deception.

Dr. Elena Vance had been a brilliant young pediatric researcher working at a private maternity hospital in Manhattan.

Victoria and Richard had had her violently abducted from her apartment on the night she gave birth to her healthy baby boy.

They had forged adoption papers, paid off corrupt hospital administrators, and threatened Elena with total destruction if she ever came looking for her child.

Mason wasn't a Sterling at all.

He was Elena's son, stolen at birth and handed over to Victoria to play the role of the perfect heir.

I dropped the papers onto the table, feeling physically sick to my stomach. "Why now?" I choked out, looking at Elena with heavy eyes. "Why come forward today?"

"Because I spent six years watching from the shadows, gathering enough ironclad evidence to tear the Sterling empire apart brick by brick," Elena said, her eyes flashing with fierce maternal fire. "I couldn't fight them while they were powerful. But when I saw what they did to my baby in that garage yesterday... I knew your security cameras had finally given me the weapon I needed."

I slumped heavily into the chair opposite her, realizing the staggering depth of the nightmare we were all trapped in.

I had destroyed Richard.

I had locked Victoria away in federal custody.

I had leveled my own home to the ground in a blind rage of righteous fury.

I believed I had finally won the war and secured my son's ultimate safety.

Looking at the true biological mother sitting across from me, I realized it was all just a comforting illusion.

Before I could process the massive revelation, the secure landline phone on the clinic desk began to ring shrilly.

Elena answered it on speakerphone, her face instantly turning ghostly pale.

It was Marcus calling from the perimeter security command post outside the clinic.

"Daniel, you need to get out of the clinic right now," Marcus's voice blared through the speaker, frantic and breathless.

"What is it, Marcus? Did the police arrive?" I asked, frowning.

"Worse," Marcus shouted over the sound of screaming sirens and screeching tires. "The federal transport bus carrying Victoria and Richard was ambushed three miles away on the highway."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. "Ambushed by whom?"

"Not by the police," Marcus replied, a note of sheer terror in his seasoned voice. "Private mercenaries. And according to our satellite tracking, they just hijacked the transport... and they're heading straight for your location right now."

Elena grabbed my hand across the table, her dark eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization.

"They aren't coming to rescue Victoria," she whispered, her voice trembling. "They're coming to finish what they started... and silence us all permanently."
