Chapter 6 - The Interrogation

Richard Sterling sat proudly behind my mahogany desk as if he still owned the room.
His silver hair was still impeccably styled, though his expensive navy sweater was slightly wrinkled from being restrained.
Victoria sat rigidly on the sofa opposite him, her arms tightly crossed and a defiant glare burning in her eyes.
Spread across the room in various chairs were Ashley, Brooke, and Madeline, looking distinctly less confident without their smartphones.
When I stepped across the threshold, the entire room went dead silent.
Richard sneered, leaning back in my executive chair with a disgusting display of arrogant condescension. "Well, look who finally decided to grace us with his presence. Did your little freight company hit traffic on the way up from Chicago, Daniel?"
I didn't answer him immediately.
I walked slowly across the Persian rug, unbuttoning my suit jacket and tossing it carelessly onto an empty chair.
I didn't look at Victoria.
I didn't look at her simpering cousins.
My entire focus locked onto the man who had tied my six-year-old son to a ceiling beam.
"Richard," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "Get out of my chair."
Richard let out a sharp, dismissive laugh. "Your chair? Son, let's get something straight right now. This house, this land, and everything inside it was purchased using capital provided by the Sterling family trust. You're just a transient tenant playing businessman."
Before Richard could blink, I reached across the heavy mahogany desk and grabbed him by the expensive cashmere collar.
I yanked him forward with enough raw, pent-up force that the heavy executive chair slammed backward into the bookshelf.
Victoria screamed, jumping to her feet. "Daniel! Don't you dare touch him!"
I ignored her completely, my face inches from Richard's pale, startled eyes.
"You tied my six-year-old son upside down like an animal," I whispered, every word dripping with suppressed fury. "You used a belt on a child who couldn't even defend himself."
Richard’s arrogance flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by sudden, flashing survival instinct. He tried to pull away, but my grip remained like a steel vice. "He was undisciplined! The boy needed to learn proper Sterling family standards! You wouldn't understand—you were raised by the damn state!"
That was the exact moment I snapped.
I drove my fist straight into the center of his expensive nose with a sickening crunch.
Richard yelled in shock and pain, tumbling backward out of the chair and crashing hard onto the Persian rug.
Blood immediately spurted from his broken nose, staining the pristine white wool a bright, violent crimson.
Ashley and Brooke shrieked in absolute terror, scrambling back against the walls like trapped animals.
Victoria rushed forward, throwing herself between me and her groaning father. "Have you lost your absolute mind? You just assaulted my father!"
I looked down at my wife, the woman I had shared a bed with for seven years, and felt absolutely nothing.
No love.
No grief.
Just cold, calculating emptiness.
"Sit down, Victoria," I commanded, my voice cutting through her hysterics like a scalpel.
She stared up at me, her mouth slightly open, finally seeing the monster she and her family had created.
"You handed him the belt," I said softly, stepping closer until she was forced to back away. "You watched him terrorize our son. You recorded it like entertainment."
"We were just building character!" she sobbed defensively, her composure finally cracking. "You're too soft on him because of your pathetic trailer-park childhood! My father was just making him strong!"
I turned my back on her and walked over to my desk, picking up the secure landline phone.

I dialed a direct extension without breaking eye contact with the bleeding patriarch on the floor.
"Marcus," I spoke clearly into the receiver. "Execute Phase One."
