Chapter 5 - The Sabotage

For the next month, I worked eighteen-hour days. I fired the corrupt middle management, instated transparent tracking software, and personally reached out to the families who had been robbed by Arthur’s scheme, initiating the return of their heirlooms.

But a dying snake still has venom.

Arthur, sitting in Rikers Island awaiting trial, was using contraband cell phones to communicate with his remaining loyalists inside the warehouses. He wanted to destroy the company before I could save it. If he couldn't have Sterling Logistics, no one would.

It started with small things. Delivery trucks getting flat tires. Pallets of high-value electronics left out in the rain.

Then came the big hit.

I received a frantic call at midnight from my new warehouse manager. "Mrs. Sterling, the fire suppression system at the Brooklyn hub has been manually overridden. The sprinklers are flooding the warehouse. We're losing millions in inventory."

I drove to Brooklyn in the pouring rain. The warehouse was a disaster zone, soaking wet cardboard and ruined goods everywhere.

I stood in the water, feeling a surge of overwhelming defeat. Maybe Arthur was right. Maybe I couldn't do this.

But then I remembered Julian. I remembered him staying up late, tracing the supply routes. He wouldn't quit.

I pulled the security footage. The cameras had been cut, but Julian had taught me how to read the digital access logs. The manual override was triggered by a keycard belonging to a senior supervisor named Greg—one of Arthur’s oldest friends.

I didn't call the police. Not yet. I called Greg into my office at 3:00 AM.

"I know you flooded the warehouse," I told him, throwing the access logs on the desk. "Arthur is going to spend the rest of his life in prison. Are you really going to throw away your life for a man who doesn't care about you?"

Greg broke down. He confessed that Arthur was paying him from a hidden offshore account to bankrupt the company.

I had my leverage.
