Chapter 1 - The Ticking Time Bomb

The fifteen-minute recess felt like a lifetime. The courtroom hallway was stifling, echoing with the hushed, arrogant whispers of Arthur Sterling and his legal team. They thought they had won. They thought I was just a grieving widow, too broken to fight back.

I sat on the wooden bench, my hands resting on Julian’s scuffed steel lockbox. My brother, Mark, paced back and forth, eyeing Arthur with pure hatred. Maya was coloring in a book, oblivious to the fact that her grandfather was trying to erase her mother from her life.

When the bailiff called us back in, Arthur walked past me. As he reached for the heavy oak door, his suit sleeve hiked up just enough to reveal his wrist.

My breath caught in my throat.

Strapped to his wrist, gleaming under the fluorescent lights, was a vintage, rose-gold Patek Philippe watch with a very specific scratch on the bezel.

It was my late mother’s watch.

It had gone "missing" from her estate safety deposit box three years ago, right after she died. Arthur’s company, Sterling Logistics, had handled the estate transfer. At the time, Arthur had offered his "deepest condolences" for the administrative error.

My blood turned to ice, and then, to absolute fire. I looked down at the lockbox. Julian had known. My husband had known his father was a monster, and he had left me the weapon to slay him.

We took our seats. Judge Vance adjusted his glasses. "Mrs. Sterling, you rejected the settlement. Are you prepared to present evidence as to why you should retain equity and custody?"

I didn't look at my lawyer. I looked directly at Arthur.

"Yes, Your Honor," I said, my voice eerily calm. "In fact, I have evidence that Arthur Sterling is not only unfit for custody, but that he belongs in a federal prison."
