Chapter 3 - The Golden Handcuffs

Detective Reynolds stepped forward, handing a search warrant to the judge. "Your Honor, acting on a sworn affidavit and evidence provided by Mrs. Sterling, we raided a storage facility in Queens this morning. We found millions of dollars in stolen estate property."

The courtroom erupted into whispers. The gallery, filled with reporters who had come for a simple wealthy family drama, realized they were suddenly witnessing a massive corporate crime bust.

"Open box number three," I told the detective.

He cut the zip-ties and pulled out a velvet tray. It was filled with diamond necklaces, vintage coins, and luxury watches.

I walked out from behind my desk and pointed directly at Arthur’s left hand.

"Including," I said, my voice carrying the weight of years of grief, "the stolen Patek Philippe currently strapped to my father-in-law's wrist."

Arthur instinctively grabbed his wrist, trying to hide it, but the cameras in the gallery were already flashing. The detective walked over to him, his expression hardening.

"Mr. Sterling," Detective Reynolds said, his hand resting on his service weapon. "Where did you get that watch?"

Arthur’s rehearsed, aristocratic composure completely collapsed. He stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. "I... it was a gift. I bought it at an auction."

"It's inscribed," I said coldly. "Turn it over. It says 'To Eleanor, forever.' My mother's name. You stole from my dead mother, Arthur. And you wore the evidence to court to try and steal my daughter."

Judge Vance slammed his gavel. "Bailiff, take Mr. Sterling into custody. We are taking an immediate recess."
