Chapter 4 - The Takeover

The image of Arthur Sterling being led out of family court in handcuffs went viral before I even made it to my car.

By 5:00 PM, Judge Vance had granted me full, unshared custody of Maya. Furthermore, with Arthur under federal investigation for grand larceny and wire fraud, the court granted my emergency motion to freeze his assets.

As Julian’s widow and the only remaining shareholder not sitting in a jail cell, I was granted temporary executive control of Sterling Logistics.

The next morning, I didn't drop Maya off at school. I left her safely with my brother and a private security detail. Instead, I drove Julian's old truck to the corporate headquarters in Manhattan.

The building was in chaos. Federal agents were boxing up Arthur’s office. The board of directors was in a panic.

I walked into the boardroom, carrying Julian’s battered lockbox, and slammed it onto the glass table. The ten men sitting there—Arthur's cronies—stared at me in shock.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, taking the seat at the head of the table. The seat that belonged to my husband. "As of 9:00 AM, I am the acting CEO of this company. And I am going to clean house."

Richard Cole, who also served as corporate counsel, scoffed. "Clara, you don't know how to run a multi-million dollar logistics firm. You're emotional. Sell the company. Walk away."

I opened the lockbox and pulled out the black ledger. "Julian didn't just track his father's stolen goods. He tracked the payouts. I know exactly which of you took bonuses to look the other way when shipments went 'missing.'"

I read out three names. Three board members went pale.

"You are fired," I told them. "Security is waiting in the lobby. You have ten minutes to clear your desks before I hand this ledger to the FBI."
