Chapter 4 - The Corrupt Badge

I stared at the police officer in absolute horror.
Grandma stepped in front of me to shield my small body.
She demanded to know how much my father was paying him to betray his badge.
The officer chuckled and said loyalty was much more expensive than money.
He pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
He told Grandma that she was being arrested for kidnapping a minor.
Grandma argued that I was covered in bruises from my father's abuse.
The officer shrugged and said he only saw a clumsy child who fell down the stairs.
He grabbed Grandma by the arm and forced her hands behind her back.
I screamed and kicked at his heavy black boots.
He easily pushed me aside and locked the cuffs on Grandma's wrists.
He dragged her toward his cruiser parked on the edge of the woods.
I followed them, crying and begging him to stop.
He opened the back door and shoved Grandma inside the cage.
He turned to me and ordered me to get into the front seat.
I backed away into the rainy darkness.
He sighed and reached for his taser.
Suddenly, a massive rock flew out of the shadows and struck the officer in the head.
He grunted in pain and collapsed into the muddy grass.
A figure stepped out from the dense bushes wearing a dark raincoat.
The stranger pulled down their hood to reveal a face I had only seen in old photographs.

It was my mother.
My father had told me she died in a car crash five years ago.
