Chapter 2 - The Glass Window

My breath caught in my throat as I saw the weapon.
Grandma instinctively took a step back.
She asked my father what he planned to do with that gun.
He calmly replied that accidents happen in large houses all the time.
He said elderly women often fall down steep staircases.
Chloe watched from the hallway with a chilling smile on her face.
She whispered that my broken doll was finally going to get thrown in the trash.
Grandma squeezed my hand tightly.
She whispered for me to be ready to run on her signal.
My father took a step toward us.
Grandma suddenly grabbed a heavy crystal vase from the entryway table.
She hurled it directly at the massive living room window.
The thick glass shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.
The loud crash echoed over the birthday music playing in the backyard.
My father flinched and covered his face to protect his eyes.
Grandma yanked my arm and pulled me through the broken window frame.
We tumbled onto the cold, wet grass of the front lawn.
I scraped my knee, but the adrenaline completely masked the pain.
We scrambled to our feet and ran toward Grandma's car parked in the driveway.
She fumbled with her keys and unlocked the doors.
We jumped inside and she slammed on the locks.
My father stood in the broken window frame with absolute fury in his eyes.
Grandma turned the ignition key.

The engine clicked but completely failed to start.
Chloe stepped out of the shadows of the garage holding a pair of heavy wire cutters.
