Chapter 7 - The Fraudulent Foundations

My father's hysterical scream echoed off the crystal chandeliers as the agents wrestled his arms behind his back.

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut with a loud, satisfying finality.

I stared down at the man who had tormented me for three decades, feeling completely unfazed by his desperate words.

"He is just trying to plant a seed of doubt, Meredith," Daniel whispered softly into my ear.

I nodded, knowing that a cornered rat will bite at absolutely anything to survive.

The federal agents hauled my father to his feet, his expensive tuxedo now covered in smashed cake and dirt.

"I am telling you the truth!" my father yelled as they dragged him toward the ballroom doors.

"Daniel didn't meet you by accident at that tech conference three years ago!"

I turned my back on him, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing any hesitation in my eyes.

The massive mahogany doors swung shut, finally removing his toxic presence from the venue.

The remaining guests began to quickly file out, desperate to distance themselves from the catastrophic scandal.

Allison was left standing alone in the center of the ruined dance floor.

Her groom was in federal custody, her father was arrested, and her mother had officially abandoned her.

She looked at me, her face completely stripped of its usual arrogant superiority.

"Meredith, please," she begged, her voice cracking pathetically.

"I have no money, no husband, and nowhere to go tonight."

I looked at the golden child who had spent her entire life mocking my clothes, my career, and my solitude.

"You can stay in my old bedroom at the house," I offered with a calm, neutral expression.

"But you will have to pay rent, and you will have to get a real job by Monday morning."

Allison burst into fresh tears, but she weakly nodded her head in defeat.

My mother walked over to us, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"I am so incredibly proud of the woman you have become, Meredith," my mother said softly.

"I am just sorry it took me thirty-two years to finally find my own courage."

I hugged her tightly, feeling a genuine connection with my mother for the very first time in my life.

Daniel and I escorted my mother out to a waiting black town car, ensuring she was safely transported to a luxury hotel.

As the car drove away, I finally let out a massive, exhausting breath.

The war was officially over, and we had won an absolute, flawless victory.

Daniel took my hand, leading me toward his waiting armored limousine.

"Let us go home, Mrs. Reyes," he said with a warm, loving smile.

I smiled back, completely ready to start the rest of my beautiful life.

But as the chauffeur opened the limousine door for us, a tall man in a grey suit stepped out from the shadows of the parking lot.

He flashed a polished badge and looked directly at me.

"Meredith Reyes, I am an investigator with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and I need you to come with me immediately."
