Chapter 9 - The Standoff

My heart completely stopped beating inside my chest.
Richard had his loaded gun pressed directly against his own innocent granddaughter's head.
"Drop your weapon right now, Mark," Richard ordered with a sickeningly calm and steady voice.
Mark slowly raised his hands in surrender, carefully dropping his federal service pistol to the wooden floor.
"Let her go right now, Richard," Mark pleaded, stepping slightly in front of me.
"The cartel is already crumbling as we speak, and the FBI has all my compiled evidence."
Richard laughed loudly, a harsh and grating sound that filled the small cabin.
"Vargas will gladly pay me ten million dollars to deliver the pesky FBI agent who ruined his entire operation."
"You sold your own family for money," I said, my voice shaking with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"Family is just an unfortunate liability in this business, Melissa," Richard replied coldly without a hint of remorse.
He began pulling Sophie violently toward the open, shattered doorway.
I knew with absolute certainty that if he walked out of that cabin, I would never see my daughter again.
I glanced down quickly at the floor and saw the heavy steel wrench I had carried from the crashed SUV.
Mark caught my desperate eye and gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod of confirmation.
"You are a pathetic coward, Dad," I yelled as loudly as I could, stepping aggressively toward him.
Richard foolishly shifted his aim toward me for a split, fatal second.
That was absolutely all the distraction Mark needed.
Mark lunged forward with terrifying speed, tackling Richard violently against the wooden log wall.
The gun went off with a loud crack, shattering a nearby window, but Sophie successfully slipped free from his grip.
I grabbed my terrified daughter and pulled her safely behind the heavy oak kitchen island.
Mark and Richard fiercely wrestled on the floor for absolute control of the deadly weapon.
A terrifying, suffocating silence filled the room as a second gunshot rang out loudly.

One man stopped moving completely on the wooden planks.
I peeked cautiously over the counter, completely terrified to see who had survived the struggle.
