Chapter 6 - The Great Escape

I watched in completely paralyzed horror as my brother bled out on the cavern floor.

My father didn't even flinch or look back as he stepped over Daniel's dying body.

He was a complete, irredeemable monster who only cared about saving himself.

Arthur nudged my shoulder urgently and pointed to a narrow crevice hidden directly behind the ore cart.

It was an incredibly tight squeeze, but it clearly led deeply into another unmapped tunnel system.

I pushed Sophie into the crack first, urging her to crawl forward as fast as she possibly could.

I squeezed into the jagged rocks right behind her, my torn ribs screaming in absolute agony.

Arthur tried to follow us, but his injured, broken arm got snagged badly on a jagged rock outcropping.

Richard's bright flashlight beam suddenly cut through the darkness, landing directly on Arthur's ragged back.

"Well, well, well," Richard chuckled darkly, stopping just a few feet away.

"Arthur, you stubborn, impossible old cockroach."

"Run, Melissa!" Arthur yelled at the top of his lungs, throwing his entire body backward to block the narrow opening.

A silenced gunshot echoed softly through the cave, and Arthur slumped lifelessly to the cold ground.

I didn't stop crawling, ignoring the tears streaming rapidly down my dirty face.

I pushed Sophie through the suffocatingly tight rock tunnel for what felt like an absolute eternity.

We finally tumbled out of the narrow shaft and into the freezing open night air.

We had crawled completely out of an old ventilation shaft on the other side of the treacherous mountain.

The freezing Colorado wind hit my face violently, bringing a fresh wave of stinging tears to my eyes.

We stumbled blindly through the dense pine forest, running purely on sheer, terrified adrenaline.

Through the dark trees, I suddenly saw the bright headlights of a car idling quietly on a dirt access road.

We ran frantically toward it, waving our arms wildly for help and rescue.

The heavy car door opened, and a tall man stepped out into the pale moonlight.

I froze completely in my tracks, my blood running absolutely cold.

It was the armed tactical mercenary who had fallen into the sinkhole earlier.

He smiled through a mask of blood, raising his heavy rifle right at Sophie's head.
