Chapter 8 - The Safehouse

The heavy airbags deployed instantly with an explosive pop, completely filling the cabin with blinding white smoke.
The mercenary was slumped completely unconscious against the shattered steering wheel.
I aggressively kicked the shattered back window entirely out of its frame and pulled Sophie to safety.
We were severely bruised and bleeding, but by some absolute miracle, we were still alive.
We ran desperately down the dark, freezing highway until we saw the warm porch lights of a secluded cabin.
I pounded frantically on the heavy oak door with both fists, screaming loudly into the night for help.
The heavy door swung open quickly, and I stumbled inside, falling heavily to my bruised knees.
"Please, my daughter and I desperately need a place to hide," I cried out to the blurry figure in front of me.
A pair of strong, incredibly familiar arms gently lifted me off the cold hardwood floor.
I looked up slowly, and absolutely all the air left my lungs in a rush.
Standing right in front of me, looking older and tired, was my husband, Mark.
"Mark?" I gasped in pure disbelief, reaching up to touch his warm, stubbled face.
"But the police told me you died in a terrible car crash two years ago."
Mark pulled me into a fierce, desperate hug, kissing the top of my head repeatedly.
"I had to fake my tragic death to secretly investigate your father's deep ties to the Vargas cartel," he whispered tearfully.
"I've been working undercover for two years to build a massive federal case to protect you both."
He knelt down quickly and hugged Sophie tightly, tears streaming freely down his weathered face.
"I am so incredibly sorry I wasn't there to stop this nightmare today," Mark cried softly.
I felt a massive, overwhelming wave of absolute relief wash over my exhausted body.
We were finally safe in the arms of the man I loved.
Suddenly, the heavy front door of the cabin was kicked completely off its hinges with a deafening crash.
My father, Richard, stood in the ruined doorway holding his suppressed pistol.

"What an incredibly touching family reunion," Richard sneered, his face twisted with pure malice.
He grabbed Sophie violently by the arm and pressed the cold gun directly to her temple.
