Chapter 5 - Blood and Betrayal

My own flesh and blood father was actively hunting us for a cartel payout.
I clamped my hand tightly over Sophie's mouth to muffle her rapid, terrified breathing.
Daniel clicked on his high-powered flashlight and began sweeping the massive cavern with a bright white beam.
"Dad, this is completely crazy," Daniel muttered, his voice shaking with obvious guilt.
"We already pushed them into the pit, isn't that enough to satisfy them?"
Richard turned violently and slapped Daniel fiercely across the face with the heavy barrel of his gun.
"Shut up and look for the bodies," Richard hissed angrily, his eyes wide with madness.
"If Vargas doesn't get a photograph of their corpses, he will absolutely kill us both tonight."
Arthur quietly shifted his weight beside me, picking up a heavy, jagged rock from the dirt.
He gave me a desperate look that clearly said he was going to create a risky distraction.
Before I could silently beg him to stop, Arthur threw the heavy rock completely across the cavern.
It shattered violently against a rusted metal pipe with a massive, echoing crash.
Daniel spun around in pure panic and fired his gun wildly into the dark shadows.
"Who is there?" Daniel screamed, frantically backing away from the noise.
Richard grabbed Daniel's shoulder violently and yanked him backward.
"You idiot, you're going to collapse the entire roof with those shots!" Richard yelled.
But Richard wasn't looking at the ceiling to check for falling rocks.
He calmly raised his suppressed pistol and aimed it directly at Daniel's chest.
"I can't afford to leave any loose ends or weak links, son," Richard whispered coldly.
He pulled the trigger twice, the suppressed shots sounding like quiet coughs in the dark.

Daniel collapsed instantly to the dirt floor, gasping helplessly for air as blood soaked his jacket.
Richard stepped cleanly over his own dying son and began walking straight toward our hiding spot.
