Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The heavy steel door shuddered violently as someone on the other side began smashing it with a sledgehammer.
We were completely trapped like rats at the end of the dark, damp tunnel.
The old rusted chains snapped under the immense pressure, and the heavy door flew open with a deafening crash.
Flashlight beams blinded us instantly as six heavily armed mercenaries flooded into the small underground space.
Arthur Whitmore stepped through the center of his men, looking completely unbothered by the damp environment.
He smiled his terrible, grandfatherly smile and told us that this was the end of the line.
He demanded the flash drive one final time, completely done with playing games.
Grace slowly pushed herself away from the stone wall, her eyes burning with an intense, fiery defiance.
She reached down into her worn boot and pulled out a small, silver flash drive.
She hobbled toward the edge of the stone floor, where a heavy iron grate covered a rushing, underground sewer river.
Grace held the flash drive directly over the dark, rushing water, balancing it between two trembling fingers.
She told Arthur that if he did not let me and Annie walk out of this tunnel right now, the evidence would disappear forever.
Arthur laughed, a cold and hollow sound that echoed terribly off the damp stone walls.
He casually ordered his men to shoot Annie first, knowing it would instantly break Grace's resolve.
The head mercenary raised his heavy assault rifle and aimed the laser sight directly at my little sister's chest.
I screamed and threw myself in front of Annie, squeezing my eyes shut and waiting for the fatal gunshot.
Suddenly, deafening police sirens completely drowned out the sound of the rushing underground water.

The ceiling above us shook violently as a massive explosion blew the reinforced steel doors entirely off their hinges at the top of the tunnel.
Dozens of tactical FBI agents poured down the stairwell, armed with riot shields and automatic weapons.
