Chapter 5 - The Golden Cage

Arthur’s men overpowered Marcus instantly, disarming him and slamming him violently onto the wet pavement.

Two of the guards grabbed me by the arms, lifting me completely off my feet and tossing me into the back of the SUV.

Another guard threw a screaming Annie in right beside me before slamming the heavy armored doors shut.

Arthur climbed into the front passenger seat, looking perfectly calm as the vehicle sped away into the night.

He did not look back at us, entirely ignoring my furious demands to know where they had taken Grace.

The ride was a blur of flashing streetlights and terrifying silence as we left the city limits entirely.

We arrived back at the billionaire’s sprawling estate, but the SUV drove past the main mansion to a hidden concrete bunker in the woods.

The guards dragged us down a flight of pristine, brightly lit stairs into a sterile underground facility.

It looked exactly like a high-tech hospital ward, complete with heart monitors and glass observation rooms.

Arthur stopped in front of the largest glass room and unlocked the heavy door with a keycard.

I gasped in shock as I saw Grace lying on a pristine white hospital bed in the center of the room.

She was hooked up to several IV bags and an oxygen monitor, looking paler than a ghost.

A private doctor in a lab coat was adjusting the fluid dripping into her veins.

I broke free from the guard's grip and ran to her side, grabbing her cold, fragile hand.

She was burning up with a severe fever, her chest barely rising and falling.

Arthur stood in the doorway, proudly claiming that he had rescued her from Marcus's cartel just in time to administer the antidote.

He told me that if I wanted my sister to live, I needed to tell him exactly where the flash drive was hidden.

I realized with absolute horror that both the cartel and the billionaire were hunting the exact same piece of evidence.

Suddenly, Grace's eyes fluttered open, glassy and unfocused in the bright light.

She recognized my face, and a surge of desperate adrenaline seemed to wake her up completely.

She gripped my shirt with surprising strength, pulling me down toward her trembling lips.

She whispered that Arthur was not the man who saved our parents, but the monster who had ordered their murders.
