Chapter 2 - The Black Car

A heavy hand suddenly clamped down on my shoulder, making me jump in sheer terror.
Arthur had crossed the room in absolute silence, and his grip was surprisingly strong for an old man.
He pulled me into the study and slammed the door shut, locking it with a heavy key.
Annie screamed and started pounding her small fists against the thick wood from the hallway.
I demanded to know why he was taking pictures of my family while we were sleeping.
Arthur walked over to the desk and calmly closed the manila folder.
He claimed that the photographs were simply a background check because he was considering hiring Grace for a high-paying job.
I yelled at him, telling him that nobody breaks into an apartment to take pictures for a job interview.
He sighed heavily, tapping his silver cane against the hardwood floor.
He promised me that the phone call he made earlier was to a private ambulance service.
Arthur swore he had sent the city's best doctors to our apartment to save Grace from her mysterious illness.
He unlocked the study door and gestured for us to follow him out to the front driveway.
A sleek black car with tinted windows was already idling by the massive iron gates.
Arthur told us to get in, promising that his driver would take us straight to our sister.
I didn't trust him for a second, but Annie was crying and begging to go back to Grace.
We climbed into the luxurious backseat, and the heavy doors locked automatically as the car sped away.
The driver was a massive man in a dark suit who refused to speak a single word to us during the entire trip.
We drove in complete silence as the wealthy neighborhoods slowly turned back into our impoverished district.
The car finally stopped in front of our crumbling brick apartment building.
I grabbed Annie’s hand and practically kicked the car door open, sprinting up the four flights of concrete stairs.
When we reached the fourth floor, I stopped dead in my tracks and felt the blood drain from my face.
May you like
Our apartment door had been violently ripped entirely off its metal hinges.
Inside, the furniture was smashed into pieces, and a fresh trail of dark blood led directly toward the open window.
