Chapter 3 - The Empty Room

Annie burst into tears the moment she saw the destruction of our small home.
I pulled her tightly against my chest, desperately looking around for any sign of our older sister.
The small cot where Grace had been resting just hours ago was completely empty and overturned.
I screamed her name, hoping she was hiding in the closet or the tiny bathroom.
The only answer was the cold wind blowing through the shattered glass of the living room window.
An elderly neighbor poked her head out of her door, trembling violently in her nightgown.
She whispered that three massive men in dark suits had kicked our door down ten minutes ago.
She said they dragged Grace out through the fire escape while she was barely conscious and begging for help.
My entire world shattered, realizing that Arthur’s supposed ambulance was actually a violent kidnapping squad.
Heavy footsteps suddenly echoed up the concrete stairwell behind us.
The silent driver of the black car stood in the hallway, blocking our only path to escape.
He reached under his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a heavy black pistol.
He did not work for Arthur Whitmore at all, but for a rival syndicate that had been tracking the billionaire's moves.
The driver, whose name was Marcus, smiled coldly and ordered us to get inside the ruined apartment.
He aimed the gun directly at Annie's trembling head, leaving me absolutely no choice but to obey.
Marcus locked the broken door as best as he could and kicked a shattered chair out of his way.
He told me that my older sister had stolen something incredibly valuable while cleaning houses in the wealthy district.
He demanded to know where Grace had hidden the encrypted flash drive before she got sick.
I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, and I told him the truth.

Marcus chuckled darkly, pulling a long, wicked hunting knife from his boot.
He walked toward Annie and promised to start cutting off her fingers until my memory miraculously improved.
