Chapter 9 - The Decoy

Agent Miller ordered me to walk toward the edge of the deep, dark water of the harbor.

She told me it was a shame I had to die, but business was simply business.

Adrian Vale suddenly stepped out from behind a massive shipping container, clapping his hands in slow, mocking applause.

He gloated about how brilliant his network was, controlling everyone from street cops to federal agents.

He admitted to my face that he had ordered Clara’s murder because she was too honest to accept his bribes.

He promised to make my death look like a tragic suicide caused by unbearable grief.

I stood at the edge of the pier, staring at the man who had ruined my entire life.

I did not beg for my life, nor did I shed a single tear of fear.

I simply asked Adrian if he was absolutely sure he wanted to confess to murder in front of a live audience.

Adrian frowned in confusion and looked at Agent Miller.

I unbuttoned my coat, revealing a red blinking light taped securely to my chest.

I had not given Agent Miller the real hard drive; I had given her a decoy.

The blinking light was a live audio transmitter connected directly to the Director of the FBI in Washington.

I smiled at Adrian and told him that every single word he just said had been recorded by the federal government.

The roar of helicopter blades suddenly shattered the silence of the morning sky.

Three massive tactical helicopters descended from the clouds, heavily armed snipers hanging from the open doors.
