Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

I pulled my heavy flashlight from my pocket and prepared for the fight of my life.

I whispered a command to Jerry, and he silently crept into the shadows beneath a row of metal benches.

The first mercenary walked down my aisle, sweeping his gun left and right.

I jumped out from behind the locker and struck him in the throat with the heavy end of my flashlight.

He dropped his weapon without making a sound, and I dragged his unconscious body out of sight.

I picked up his automatic rifle, checked the magazine, and took a deep breath.

Two more guards turned the corner and immediately opened fire when they saw me.

Bullets shattered the metal lockers all around me, sending sparks flying into the dark air.

I returned fire, forcing them to take cover behind a massive concrete pillar.

The corrupt detective yelled orders, maneuvering his men to completely flank my position.

Suddenly, Jerry lunged from the shadows like a terrifying wolf, clamping his jaws onto the detective’s arm.

The detective screamed in agony, dropping his weapon and stumbling backward into his own men.

I used the precious seconds of chaos to sprint across the open terminal toward the subway access doors.

Jerry let go of the detective and ran right behind me, dodging a hail of erratic gunfire.

We burst through the glass doors and slid down the escalator, safely escaping into the underground tunnels.

We finally reached the safety of the dark maintenance tunnels and I stopped to catch my breath.

I knelt down to praise my brave dog, but my hand came away covered in warm, dark blood.

Jerry whined softly, collapsing onto the concrete floor with a bullet wound in his back leg.
