Chapter 4 - The Brother's Signature

I pulled my hood up to hide my face and immediately stepped backward into the shadows of the alley.
The corrupt detective ordered his officers to secure the perimeter while he casually checked Victor’s pulse.
I silently whistled for Jerry, and we retreated deep into the labyrinth of dark city streets.
We walked for miles until we found a cheap, rundown motel on the outskirts of town that accepted cash.
I locked the flimsy door of our room and collapsed onto the lumpy mattress in sheer exhaustion.
Jerry curled up at my feet, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the door handle.
I opened the waterproof bag and spread Clara’s documents across the cheap wooden desk.
The financial records were incredibly detailed, showing millions of dollars moving through the children's charity into offshore accounts.
It was a massive money-laundering operation for a heavily armed international cartel.
Clara had printed out wire transfer receipts, bank statements, and shipping manifests.
I organized the papers by date, trying to understand how Adrian had pulled this off without drawing federal attention.
My eyes landed on a massive wire transfer receipt dated exactly one week after Clara’s funeral.
The authorization signature on the bottom of the document was not Adrian’s.

I picked up the paper with trembling hands and stared at the familiar, sloppy handwriting.
The illegal transaction had been personally signed and approved by my older brother, Mark.
