Chapter 8 - The Federal Agent

I tore my shirt into strips and frantically wrapped them around Jerry’s bleeding leg to stop the hemorrhage.
He licked my hand gently, showing incredible bravery despite the terrible pain.
I knew I could not take him to a regular veterinary clinic because Adrian controlled the local police.
I remembered a business card Clara had hidden in her waterproof bag.
It belonged to a federal agent named Sarah Miller, who operated completely outside of the local jurisdiction.
I found a working payphone in the subway tunnel and dialed the secure federal number.
Agent Miller answered immediately and listened to my desperate situation without interrupting.
She told me to bring the hard drive and the dog to an abandoned warehouse shipyard on the docks.
I carried Jerry in my arms for two miles, moving strictly through the shadows to avoid detection.
We arrived at the shipyard just as the sun began to peek over the cold horizon.
Agent Miller was waiting for us next to a black armored SUV with a medical kit already prepared.
She expertly bandaged Jerry’s leg, assuring me that the bullet had missed the bone and he would survive.
I felt an overwhelming wave of gratitude and handed her the encrypted hard drive.
She examined the drive carefully, nodded her head, and placed it inside her jacket pocket.

She then pulled a suppressed pistol from her holster and aimed it directly at my chest.
She smiled coldly and told me that Adrian paid much better than the federal government.
