Chapter 9 - The Betrayal

I stood in front of Tara, shielding her body with my own.

"Do it, David!" Richard barked, growing impatient.

David looked into my eyes, and for a fleeting second, I saw the ghost of the man I had married.

Tears streamed down his face as his finger tightened on the trigger.

"I am so sorry, Sarah," David whispered.

Suddenly, David spun around and fired three rapid shots directly into Richard's chest.

Richard's eyes went wide with shock as blood blossomed across his pristine white suit.

He stumbled backward, dropping his silver handgun, and collapsed onto the cold stone floor.

The mercenaries froze in absolute stunned silence for a fraction of a second.

That was all the time Amina needed.

She snatched a rifle from the nearest guard and unleashed a hail of covering fire.

"Run!" Amina screamed, tossing me the keys to her jeep.

David grabbed Tara's chains and used a master key to frantically unlock her restraints.

"I never stopped trying to buy you back, Tara," David cried as the heavy iron cuffs fell away.

Before Tara could even respond, the dying Richard raised his silver handgun from the floor.

He fired a single, deafening shot.

The bullet struck David squarely in the back, dropping him instantly to the ground.

"Dad!" Tara screamed, lunging forward to catch him.

David coughed up blood, pushing us both toward the tunnel exit with his remaining strength.

"Get her out of here, Sarah," David gasped, his eyes finally going blank.

I grabbed Tara's hand and pulled her toward the dark ventilation shaft.

Amina threw a smoke grenade into the center of the cavern, blinding the remaining guards.

Richard, with his dying breath, reached over and pressed a blinking red button on the wall.

A terrifying mechanical alarm began to wail throughout the underground complex.

Explosive charges planted in the ceiling detonated, bringing massive boulders crashing down around us.
